SILVER CITY, N.M. – The Western New
Mexico University athletic department is pleased to name Antonio
Burgos as the new head tennis coach of the Mustangs as
announced by Athletic Director Mark Coleman.
"We are very excited to have Coach Burgos join our staff," Coleman
said. "He brings a wealth of experience and will continue to
help build our tennis program."
For the past several years, Coach Burgos has been coaching
nationally ranked juniors out in California.
“This is a great opportunity to build on an already
successful program and take it to the next level,” Burgos
said. “I am ready to leave the big city and Silver City is
the perfect place for me, I feel very lucky to have this
position.”
In addition to coaching juniors, Burgos also has spent time as a
USTA High Performance Coach and was also a pro coach on the
women’s tour.
“I realized I had a passion for coaching in my early
20’s and I loved to coach more than play,” he said.
Most recently he has become the Executive Director of a non-profit
helping diverse communities go to college. So far, he has a 100
percent success rate of getting kids through his non-profit and
enrolled in college.
“I started the non-profit working part-time for about 13
years,” he said. “Then for the past six years, I have
moved into a full-time roll and enjoying every bit of
it.”
Even though this will be his first collegiate head coaching
position, Burgos has experience as an Assistant Head Coach at
Moorpark College and looks forward to getting started at WNMU.
“My top priority will be having the players leave WNMU as one
of their top highlights of their life,” he said.
Burgos played two years of college tennis at Moorpark at the
top-flight singles position and was named MVP both years, as well
as claiming All-Western State Conference honors.
