NSCAA Announces 2008 Pre-season Polls
KANSAS CITY, Kan. - August 14, 2008 - The National Soccer Coaches Association of America announced its 2008 pre-season men's and women's soccer polls on Tuesday. Three Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference men's soccer programs were ranked in the top 25 while two-time National Champion Metro State was ranked in the women's poll.
The defending RMAC men's soccer champion, Metro State, begins the season ranked seventh in the nation after finishing last season with a 16-3-3 record. The Roadrunners, who went undefeated in league games (11-0-3), ended their 2007 season to Midwestern State in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, 1-8.
Fort Lewis College, which won the national title in 2005 and were the NCAA runners-up in 2006, are ranked 16th in the NSCAA pre-season poll. The Skyhawks defeated Colorado Mines, 3-0, in the RMAC tournament championship game to advance to the NCAA playoffs where they fell to West Texas A&M, 1-2, in the first round.
Ranked 23rd in the nation in this year's pre-season poll, Regis University recorded an 11-7-1 overall record in 2007 and a 9-4-1 mark in conference games to finish third in the league.
The 2004 and 2006 NCAA national champion Roadrunners won the women's conference regular season title in 2007 with a 10-1-1 record (16-4-2 overall). They received a third seed in the NCAA Midwest Regional Tournament where they defeated West Texas, 1-0 in double overtime in the first round before facing second seed Incarnate Word in the following round. UIW advanced to the quarterfinal round after out-scoring the Roadrunners in a shootout. The two teams tied 2-2 after regulation and two overtime periods.
RMAC soccer teams will kick off the 2008 season starting Aug. 28. They will be competing in the newly formed Central Region which consists of the RMAC and the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. The men's and women's RMAC pre-season polls will be announced on Tuesday, Aug. 19.
