Truman State University recorded the highest team grade point
average (GPA) in the fourteenth annual Division II All-Academic
Wrestling Team selection and won the Academic National
Championship. Their GPA of 3.443 is the third highest ever
recorded. It is third only to the 3.519 that the University
of Nebraska at Kearney scored in 2004, and the 3.476 that Colorado
School of Mines scored last year. Truman State University has
now won the Academic National Championship a total of three
times. Previous championships were won in 1996-97 and
2001-02. Only Colorado School of Mines has won more
championships with five. Six other NCAA II schools have also
won the National Championships. They include the University
of Wisconsin-Parkside, Fort Hays State University, West Liberty
State College, Minnesota State University-Mankato, the University
of Nebraska at Omaha and the University of Nebraska at
Kearney. In 2005 the University of Nebraska at Omaha hosted
the NCAA II National Championships and won both the wrestling and
the academic national titles. They are the only school to
accomplish that feat. The Team GPA is calculated by averaging
the cumulative grade point averages of ten wrestlers from each team
of which eight of those wrestlers must have competed in their
team's NCAA II National Qualifying tournament.
