
Roger Walters Named Mesa State Women's Basketball Coach

Grand Junction, Colo. - Roger Walters has been named head women's basketball coach at Mesa State College announced today by Athletic Director Butch Miller.
"Roger is an outstanding addition to our coaching staff. His experience and success as a head coach will be a great asset and allow our women's program its best opportunity to compete immediately in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference", said Miller. "Roger will bring a commitment to MSC and our student-athletes that will result in academic success and a positive college experience that will extend beyond their college years", added Miller.
Walters replaces Timi Brown who announced her resignation following the completion of this season after five years at the helm. Walters becomes the tenth head coach in the programs history.
Walters has over 12 years of head coaching experience at Rifle High School and most recently Roaring Fork High School. He is a six-time Western Slope League Coach of the Year and was named 3A Coach of the Year in 2005-06. His teams have advanced to the state tournament six times including two back-to-back second place finishes (2004-05, 2005-06). In his 12 years as head boys varsity coach he has posted a 209-76 overall record.
From 1995-2002 he coached the boys varsity basketball team at Rifle High School where he posted a 94-59 overall record, two first place league titles and three second place district finishes.
Walters took over the boys varsity head coach job at Roaring Fork High School in 2003 and in five seasons (2003-2008) posted an impressive 115-17 overall record. Walters guided the team to four first place league and district titles, went undefeated in league play in his first four years and lost just three games in league action in his five years at the helm. He led the team to the state tournament all five years, with two second place finishes in 2004-05 and 2005-06.
Prior to becoming head boys varsity coach Walters was the varsity assistant boys coach, freshman boys coach and junior varsity boys coach.
A two-time Teacher of the Year at Rifle High School he taught Social Studies, American History and Geography. He began his teaching at Riverside Junior High as a history teacher.
Walters earned his Bachelor Degree from Mesa State College in History-Secondary Education.
