Nebraska-Kearney's Jade Meads Heads 2008-09 Daktronics All-Central Region Women's Basketball Team

Colorado Springs, Colo. - Senior guard Jade Meads of Nebraska-Kearney was named the 2008-09 Daktronics Central Region Player of the Year.  Joining Meads on the First Team is teammate Jonni Mildenberg, St. Cloud State guard Katie Tacheny, Winona State forward Ana Wurtz, and Adams State guard Vera Jo Bustos.  Sports information directors from the region voted for this year's Daktronics All-Central Region Team.

Despite missing eight games to an injury this season, Meads was voted the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Player of the Year and the RMAC East Division Player of the Year, and she was named to the All-RMAC First Team and All-RMAC East Division First Team.  Meads ranks second in the league in scoring (18.8) and fourth in rebounding (8.3).  She posted nine double-doubles this year and was named the RMAC East Division Player of the Week three times.  Meads was also voted to the RMAC All-Academic Second Team by the leagues sports information directors.

Mildenberger joined Meads on the RMAC All-Academic Second Team and was voted the RMAC Co-Defensive Player of the Year, as well as the All-RMAC East Division Defensive Player of the Year, and to the RMAC East Division First Team. Mildenberger ranks fourth in the league in scoring with 17.2 points per game and sixth in rebounding with 8.2 rebounds per game.  She was also named the RMAC East Division Player of the Week three times.  Meads and Mildenberger enter the 2009 NCAA North Central Region Tournament as the No. 4 seed and will play No. 5 seed Minnesota State-Moorhead on Thursday at 8 p.m.

Tacheny continues to earn awards this season as she was named a finalist for the 2009 State Farm Coaches' All-America Basketball Team, to the First Team All-Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC), and to the NSIC/Sanford Health All-Tournament Team. Tacheny leads the NSIC in scoring (16.8), and she ranks second in steals (2.70) and three-point field goal percentage (.434).  She was named an NSIC Player of the Week and she helped lead the Huskies to the 2009 NSIC/Sanford Health Tournament Championship, the first conference title for SCSU since the 1989 season and the sixth in school history.  Tacheny and the Huskies, seeded No. 7 in the Central Region Tournament, will play second seed Fort Lewis Thursday at 1 p.m.

Wurtz, a 5-8 junior guard, leads the league in three-point field goals made (2.97 per game), ranks second in scoring (1.61 points per game) and second in three-point field goals percentage (.443).  She was named to the All-NSIC First Team, the NSIC Player of the Week twice in December and the WBCA National Player of the Month for December 2008.  Wurtz led her team to the NSIC Tournament championship game and to the No. 3 seed in the NCAA Central Region Tournament.  The Warriors will face sixth seed CSU-Pueblo on Thursday at 3 p.m.

Bustos helped the Adams State Grizzlies to a school record 14 wins (NCAA era 1992-93-present) after they finished the season 14-14 overall and 10-9 in the RMAC.  She led the conference in free throw percentage (.885) and was third overall in scoring (17.9).  Bustos and the Grizzlies earned a seventh seed in the RMAC Tournament and won eight of the last 12 games.  She was named to the All-RMAC First Team and the RMAC West Division Player of the Year, and she was a unanimous choice for the All-RMAC West Division First Team. Bustos, who tabulated two double-doubles this year, was named the RMAC West Division Player of the Week three times.
