Houghton Selected as RMAC Volleyball Coordinator of Officials

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Commissioner Joel R. Smith announced today that Gary Houghton is the new coordinator of officials for volleyball.  Houghton replaces Joan Powell who was named the NCAA’s inaugural national coordinator of officials and will serve as the primary administrator of the Volleyball Officiating Program.

Houghton has spent over 25 years as a volleyball official with experience in evaluation, training and supervising officials.  For the past six years, Houghton has been a referee chair for the USAV Rocky Mountain Region, and has been in charge of training, mentoring and scheduling officials in Colorado and Wyoming.  He also creates training videos for officials, conducts clinics for officials in the region, and works with the Rocky Mountain Region office scheduling officials for matches during the USAV season.

“I am excited about the opportunity to work with the coaches, administrators, officials and the RMAC office,” said Houghton. “I have been involved with the RMAC for 26 years and I intend to continue and improve the professionalism and quality of officiating through continued training and evaluation.”

A USA/PAVO national official, Houghton has officiated volleyball matches in the RMAC since 1985.  He has also worked in numerous Division I conferences as a volleyball official, and is a member of the Rocky Mountain region Board of Directors.

Houghton also serves as a USAV Arbitrator, where he is involved with issues in the areas of ethics and eligibility.  He is responsible for training lines people for the University of Colorado and University of Wyoming.

A software developer in Denver, Houghton received his Bachelor of Science degree from Ohio State University.
