Powell Named RMAC Coordinator of Volleyball Officials
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- The Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference is proud to announce that Joan Powell will immediately assume the responsibilities of Coordinator of Volleyball Officials. Powell replaces George Egan who resigned last December after serving in the position for the last 10 years.
"I look forward to working with the RMAC staff, the coaches, athletic directors, event managers and officials," said Powell. "I hope to continue to improve the quality of officiating through training and evaluation. After all, the RMAC gave me my start years ago."
Powell first began to officiate in the league in 1975. Her successful officiating career includes calling matches at every level consisting of three NCAA DII and eight NCAA DI National Championship tournaments. Powell, who still officiates matches for the RMAC, spends a majority of her time working in eight Division I conferences. She is extremely active in both Professional Association of Volleyball Officials (PAVO) and USA Volleyball (USAV) organizations and she has served as the USAV National Team and USAV Olympic Team Leader for four tours in 2007 and 2008.
"We are fortunate to get someone of Joan's caliber in this position; she is a great ambassador for the sport of volleyball," stated RMAC Associate Commissioner Sandee Mott. "She is well respected nationwide for her professionalism, knowledge and commitment to the overall development of the sport and specifically officiating programs."
Powell had a decorated volleyball coaching career at Coronado High School, leading her team to three state championship titles (1983, 1988, 1992). She was also named the Colorado Coach of the Year in each of those three years. Powell was inducted into the Colorado High School Activities Association Hall of Fame this past January. She was also inducted into the Colorado Springs Sports Corporation Hall of Fame in 2005.
Powell received her Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Arizona in 1973. She and her husband reside in Colorado Springs.
