USTFCCCA DII Women's Track & Field All-Academic Teams

Ashland, Grand Valley State Women Are Division II’s Scholar Teams of the Year

NEW ORLEANS – The women’s track & field teams at Ashland University and Grand Valley State University were named Monday as Scholar Teams of the Year in Division I for the 2010 seasons by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). The squads earned the distinction as a result of being the highest-placing teams with at least a 3.00-cumulative GPA at the most recent NCAA indoor and outdoor championship, respectively. In addition, the USTFCCCA announced 67 teams as All-Academic teams for the track & field seasons.

Indoor Track & Field Scholar Team of the Year – Ashland

Ashland tied for the second position, along with Grand Valley State, at the NCAA Indoor Championships in March with 47 points. Ashland claimed the title of Indoor Scholar Team of the Year by virtue of their tiebreaking 3.34 cumulative team GPA. At the indoor championships, juniors Steph Tinney and Abby Kacsandi won national titles in the 400 meters and long jump, respectively. In addition, both earned All-Academic honors individually. Sophomore Kelly Ash also won an NCAA crown, doing so with a 51-1 (15.57m) toss in the shot put. Tara Cooper and Ash took second and fifth in the weight throw while junior Lisa Roth was fourth in the pentathlon.

Outdoor Track & Field Scholar Team of the Year – Grand Valley State

The Lakers of Grand Valley State claimed 47 points at the NCAA Outdoor Championships for third place in the team race. National runner-up honors went to sophomore Monica Kinney in the 1500 and freshman Liz Murphy in the hammer throw. Kinney also finished fourth at 5000 meters. Chanelle Caldwell placed third at 800 meters while Candice Wheat was fourth in the 100 hurdles and Jocelyn Kuksa was fourth in the pole vault. The 4x400-meter relay team was fourth as well. Maegan Doyen was seventh in the high jump, Sam Lockhart was seventh in the discus, and Danielle Fonseca was eighth in the 400-meter hurdles.

All-Academic Status Earned by 67 Teams

In addition to the Scholar Teams of the Year, the USTFCCCA also announced the women’s 2010 Division II All-Academic Track & Field Teams. A total of 67 institutions earned the distinction as a result of a cumulative team GPA of 3.0 or better.

Incarnate Word posted the nation’s highest cumulative GPA through the winter 2010 term with a 3.64. Northern Kentucky was next at 3.61.

The PSAC notched 10 members as All-Academic teams, including East Stroudsburg, Edinboro, Indiana (Pa.), Kutztown, Lock Haven, Mansfield, Millersville, Shippensburg, Slippery Rock, and West Chester. The MIAA, with nine teams honored, was the second best among conferences.

The list of men’s squads to reach All-Academic status in Division II will be announced on Tuesday, August 3.
