USTFCCCA DII Men's Track & Field All-Academic Teams

Men’s Scholar Team of the Year Honors in Division II Again Swept by Ashland

Eagles were tops in their class for second-straight year in both indoor and outdoor seasons for academics, athletics

NEW ORLEANS – The men’s track & field team at Ashland University swept indoor and outdoor Scholar Team of the Year honors in Division II for the second-consecutive year as announced Tuesday by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). The Eagles earned both awards as a result of being the highest-placing teams with at least a 3.00-cumulative GPA at the most recent NCAA indoor and outdoor championship, respectively. In addition, the USTFCCCA announced 34 teams as All-Academic teams for the track & field seasons.

Indoor Track & Field Scholar Team of the Year/Outdoor Track & Field Scholar Team of the Year – Ashland

For the second-straight year the Ashland Eagles swept indoor and outdoor claims to the Scholar Team of the Year award. At the NCAA Indoor Championships in March, Ashland placed seventh in the team competition with 30 points. Junior Kurt Roberts won a national title in the shot put (64-11½, 19.80m) while Mike Jeffery, Ryan Loughney, Richard Quick, and Cory Meuleman went 2-6-7-8 in the weight throw. Sophomore Carsten Krohn notched a third-place national showing in the pentathlon with 5,219 points.

Outdoors, the Eagles finished sixth with 33 points. Loughney, a sophomore, claimed top honors with the hammer (218-6, 66.60m) and Jeffery placed fifth in the same event. Roberts and DJ Duke notched third and fifth places in the shot put. And, Blaine Maag took sixth in the discus. In addition, Ashland’s 4x400-meter relay team of senior Nick Bellanco, senior Edwin Smth, freshman Cory Lamar, and junior Joe Horn was third at the national meet.

Overall, through the winter 2010 term, Ashland has a cumulative team GPA of 3.04.

All-Academic Status Earned by 34 Teams

In addition to the Scholar Teams of the Year, the USTFCCCA also announced the men’s 2010 Division II All-Academic Track & Field Teams. A total of 34 institutions earned the distinction as a result of a cumulative team GPA of 3.0 or better.

Slippery Rock reported the highest cumulative team GPA in the nation at 3.58. Johnson C. Smith was second-best at 3.53.

With five of their members listed with All-Academic status, the PSAC lead all conferences in the category. PSAC members East Stroudsburg, Edinboro, Indiana (Pa.), Lock Haven, and Slippery Rock all made the cut. The GLVC, RMAC, GLIAC, and the GNAC each had four squads earn All-Academic status.
