Statement by chancellor, athletic director on death of UCCS' David Mueller

University of Colorado at Colorado Springs Chancellor Pam Shockley-Zalabak and Athletic Director Steve Kirkham issued the following statement today, July 20, in response to the death of UCCS student-athlete David Mueller.

Mueller, of Colorado Springs, was to begin his sophomore year studying business and was a member of the Mountain Lion men's track team. He died early Sunday morning July 19 following a single-car accident near 30th Street and Garden of the Gods Road.

"On behalf of the university community, we want to express our sorrow upon learning of the death of David Mueller and to offer the university's condolences to his family and friends," Shockley-Zalabak and Kirkham said.

As a student-athlete, Mueller was named All-Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference in both the 200- and 400-meter dashes in outdoor track as well as in the 55- and 200-meter dashes in indoor track. In his first season with the Mountain Lions, Mueller established new outdoor school records in the 200, 400 and 4 x 100 relay. His indoor records include the 55, 60, 200, 4 x 200 relay and the distance medley.

UCCS track and field coach Mark Misch called Mueller as "without a doubt the best all-around sprinter in UCCS history."

The University Counseling Center will provide grief counseling and has blocked off three Fridays (July 24, July 31 and Aug. 7) between 1 and 3 p.m. for walk-in group grief counseling. Students may also call 255-3354.

Mueller's friends and family held a candlelight vigil Monday night at the Coronado High School track, 1590 W. Filmore Street, Colorado Springs.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at the UCCS Gymnasium.
