In keeping with the trend of expansion at Colorado Christian University, CCU Athletics announces plans to add varsity softball and JV women’s volleyball for the 2011-2012 year. JV volleyball will begin competition in the fall, while softball will not compete until the spring of 2012.
Cougar Volleyball graduate assistant Tina Kettles will serve as head coach of the JV squad, which is expected to compete against regional junior and community college teams. The program becomes CCU’s third at the junior varsity level; JV men’s and women’s basketball programs were added to Colorado Christian’s athletics roster in 2009.
The addition of softball marks the first new sport addition since CCU added women’s golf in 2005. “We are excited about the new opportunities we will be offering student-athletes in 2011,” commented Athletic Director Darren Richie. “There has always been a high level of interest in softball by CCU students, and we believe the addition of the sport at the varsity level will not only grow our athletics program, but will cultivate the excitement for Cougar Athletics on our campus.”
CCU’s newest sport will likely compete at local high schools or the Lakewood Park fields, less than a mile from the Lakewood campus and currently the home of Colorado Christian’s men’s and women’s tennis programs. The thirteenth RMAC team to offer the sport, the Cougars will play a schedule that includes mostly Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action.
Athletic Director Darren Richie is currently heading up a search for Cougar Softball’s first head coach. Student-athletes interested in playing for CCU should contact Richie at drichie@ccu.edu.
