ST. JOSEPH, Mo. - No. 4 Metro State fell behind 4-0 after two innings and lost 10-3 to No. 19 Angelo State (Texas) in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in St. Joseph, Mo. Metro State dropped to 51-5 with the loss, while ASU improved to 49-13. The Roadrunners will face No. 7 Wayne State (Mich.) on Saturday in the loser's bracket at 2:30 p.m. The Warriors fell 3-1 to No. 3 Hawaii Pacific on Thursday.
The Roadrunners were called for 20 illegal pitches in the first four innings, leading to four early runs for the Rambelles.
Leadoff batter Sarah DeMoss walked to lead off the game after three illegal pitches. She then stole second base and advanced to third in another illegal pitch. She scored when the second batter of the game grounded out to second for the quick lead. All-America second baseman Alix Dean scored on a single by Amanda Wilhelm with two outs for the second run of the game.
Megan Pumphrey hit a one-out homer for the Rambelles in the second after Christie Robinson struck out Chelsey Walters to open the inning, despite more illegal pitch calls. Robinson was pulled for Brittany Moss after the home run and the illegal pitches continued, leading to a walk to No. 9 hitter Nicole Smith. After stealing second, she scored on a double by DeMoss for a 4-0 Rambelle lead.
Sarah Rusch singled with two outs in the top of the third and scored on a home run to left field by Tara Mickelson as the Roadrunners cut the lead in half. The blast was her 24th of the season, adding to her nation-leading total.
More illegal pitches led to another run for ASU in the third as Wilhelm walked with the aid of more illegals and advanced two bases on illegal pitches.
Angelo State finally scored some runs with the aid of its bats in the fourth inning, using doubles by DeMoss and Dean and a single by Wilhelm to score three times to take an 8-2 lead.
Mickelson got one run back for the Roadrunners with a two-out double into the right field corner that scored Rusch in the top of the fifth.
ASU scored two unearned runs in the sixth.
Robinson suffered the loss, dropping to 28-3 this season as she allowed three runs in 1 1/3 innings, before being pulled after totaling 12 illegal pitches. Offensively, Mickelson and freshman Aubree Maul both went 2-for-3.
