Hawkins named Interim Head Coach

GOLDEN, Colo. – Kristie Hawkins has been named the Colorado School of Mines Interim Head Softball Coach as announced today by Director of Athletics Tom Spicer.
Hawkins served an Assistant Coach whose primary duties were outfield play and hitting instruction at Mines for the past two seasons. In 2009, Hawkins helped guide Mines to its first NCAA Tournament appearance in program history. The Orediggers finished the 2009 season with a record of 39-19 overall and 28-8 in RMAC play establishing single-season program records for both total victories and conference victories. CSM's outfielders Kaleigh Starr and Margie Cone both earned All-RMAC honors. Starr also garnered Honorable Mention All-American honors becoming one of the first softball players to earn that honor.
In 2010, Mines finished second in the East Division posting a record of 24-26 overall and 18-19 in conference play. The Orediggers have qualified for the RMAC Tournament during each of the past three seasons including 2009 and 2010 with Hawkins on staff.
Prior to coming to Mines, Hawkins served as an Assistant Coach at Thornton Academy in Saco, Maine and worked as a coach and instructor for the U18 Frozen Ropes Elite Team.
A three-year starter for the University of Maine, Hawkins earned Second Team America East Conference honors in her final season with the Black Bears. Hawkins graduated in 2007 with a bachelor’s degree in Education.
Hawkins takes over for Annie Van Wetzinga who accepted the head coaching position at Upper Iowa.
