Athletic director Mark Coleman announced the resignation of head tennis coach Erik Burton late Monday afternoon. Burton recently accepted a position at another university. A search for his replacement will begin immediately.
A 1997 Western New Mexico University graduate and student-athlete, Burton came back to WNMU in 2006 as the men’s and women’s tennis coach. The men’s team has advanced to the NCAA Division II championships the last three years and captured two consecutive RMAC regular season and tournament championships.
Burton’s coaching career began at the elite Gainey Ranch Estate Club in Scottsdale, Arizona, where he worked with several nationally-ranked juniors. In 2001, Burton moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico where he was an assistant professional at the Tennis Club of Albuquerque and coached top players. In 2002, Coach Burton was an assistant coach for the University of New Mexico and helped the Lady Lobos capture their first Mountain West Conference Championship.
