Fort Lewis Holds Off Colorado Mines, 72-67, to Win RMAC Shootout Title
PUEBLO, Colo. – Fort Lewis College won their third Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Shootout title in school history after defeating top seed Colorado Mines, 72-67, Saturday night at the Colorado State Fair Events Center.
The Skyhawks also won titles in 2008 and 2002. Fort Lewis College becomes only the second school in RMAC history to win both the RMAC men’s and women’s basketball Shootout titles in the same year. Metro State accomplished the feat in 2005.
DeAndre Lansdowne led all scorers with 17 points. He made 6 of 10 field goals and 3 of 4 free throws. Daniel Steffensen added 15 points, seven rebounds (all defensive) and four assists on his way to earning RMAC All-Tournament Most Valuable Honors. David Kanyinda scored nine of his 12 points from the free throw line, making 9 of 10 attempts.
Dale Minschwaner paced Colorado Mines with 19 points and 11 rebounds. Gordon Galloway added 15 points and eight rebounds, as well as two assists, two blocked shots and a steal.
Fort Lewis shot 56.1 percent from the floor (23 of 41) and 74.1 percent from the free throw line (20 of 27). The Orediggers registered 26 of 61 field goals for 42.6 percent and 11 of 15 free throws (73.3 percent).
Fort Lewis will receive an automatic berth to the NCAA tournament. The 64-team bracket will be announced Sunday night at 8 p.m. on www.ncaa.com.
