After an extensive process that included over 200 resumes, Colorado Christian University Athletic Director Darren Richie announced Wednesday the hiring of Kevin Lubbers as CCU’s newest Head Men’s Basketball Coach.
Coach Lubbers comes to the Cougars from Trinity Christian College outside Chicago, where he led the Trolls for the past two seasons. Under his tutelage, the squad earned a CCAC Co-Champion banner after posting an 11-3 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference record in 2010-11. For his efforts, Lubbers was named Co-Coach of the year in the conference.
In addition to their prowess on the court (including a 2011 NCCAA Region Championship), Lubbers’ players stepped up in the classroom (3.15 team GPA) and in the community (service projects included time with half a dozen ministries in the Chicago area) in the past two years.
Prior to his stint as Head Coach, Lubbers acted as Assistant Coach for the TCC squad for five years, helping guide his teams to two CCAC Tournament Championships, an NAIA National Tournament appearance, and another CCAC regular season Co-Championship.
In addition to his coaching duties, Lubbers served on the faculty and as Assistant Athletic Director at TCC.
“We interviewed a number of outstanding and overly qualified candidates,” commented Richie on the hire. “After all was said and done, we were impressed with the complete package that Coach Lubbers presented. I believe that he will fit very well into our community and staff, and more importantly, he will be a tremendous fit for the team. The expectations he holds for his players are high, and he is a proven winner that has the skills to recruit talented, Christian players. We believe the future of CCU Basketball is bright with Coach Lubbers at the helm.”
“My family and I extremely excited about the door that God has opened in our lives at Colorado Christian” remarked Lubbers Wednesday morning. “I am confident that in the coming years we will be able to establish a highly successful program where young men grow and lead spiritually, academically, and athletically. I trust that God will bless this process for all those involved. My family and I are excited to begin this new chapter in our lives.”
With just over two months remaining before the start of the 2011-12 school-year, Coach Lubbers will hit the ground running. After introducing wife Anne and daughter Daisy to CCU, he will meet with players and then travel East to wrap up recruiting for the 11-12 campaign.
