Tobey, Unkrich Selected as RMAC April Athletes of the Month

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Nebraska-Kearney’s Dane Tobey (track & field) and Colorado School of Mines’ Kelly Unkrich (softball) have been selected as the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Athletes of the Month for April 2011.  The league’s sports information directors nominate the student-athletes that are then selected by the league office.

Senior thrower Dane Tobey (Waco, Neb./Utica-Centennial) recorded an NCAA automatic or provisional throw in the shot put and discus in every meet he competed in (six) in April.  He set a new school-record in the discus (187-1) on April 2nd in a home dual with Chadron State.  That throw was an NCAA automatic effort that currently ranks first in the RMAC and third nationally.  He went on to have two more automatic efforts, and three provisional tosses, in the discus.  Tobey placed first in the discus four times and was then seventh at the Drake Relays and second at the Nebraska Open, both Division I-heavy meets.  He had six provisional throws in the shot put, finishing first four times and placing runner up at Drake and third at the NU Open.  Tobey threw a season-best of 58-8.75 came at the prestigious Drake Relays, a meet where he was the defending champ.  His throw currently ranks first in the RMAC and sixth nationally.

Sophomore right-handed pitcher Kelly Unkrich (Highlands Ranch, CO / Mountain Vista HS) compiled an 8-1 record with a 0.91 ERA during her nine appearances (all starts) in the month of April.  She tossed eight complete games – including three shutouts – and limited the opposition to a .218 batting average.  In her 61.2 combined innings pitched, she registered 46 strikeouts while allowing just eight earned runs and 11 walks.  Unkrich did not allow an earned run during four of her nine appearances in April and amassed a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage (four putouts, 30 assists, zero errors) in 34 total chances.  Unkrich, who is now 19-7 on the season with a 1.36 ERA, also established a new CSM single-season record for shutouts (six) during game two of CSM’s doubleheader at Chadron State on Apr. 23.  She was selected as the 2011 RMAC Pitcher of the Year after leading the Orediggers to a share of the RMAC Regular-Season Championship.
