Hensley, Petri Named January RMAC Athletes of the Month

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - February 4, 2010 -- The Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference instituted an awards program to recognize outstanding performances by student-athletes throughout the league by honoring student-athletes each month. The league's sports information directors nominate the student-athletes that are then selected by the league office. This month's award winners for January 2010 are wrestler Josh Hensley of Adams State and basketball player Kaitlin Petri of Chadron State.

Sophomore Hensley earned an impressive 11-0 record in January; recording bonus-point wins in all his matches (one forfeit, one fall, seven technical falls, and two major decisions).  He outscored his opponents 146-13 during the month and was named as the Michael Horton Most Outstanding Wrestler at the Midwest Classic, as well as the RMAC Wrestler of the Week on Jan. 5.  On Jan. 20 he was listed as the top wrestler in NCAA Division II in the 141-pound bracket.  Hensley, who owns a 22-3 record this year with 19 bonus point wins, defeated No. 2 Andre Harrison of Fort Hays State by a 12- 2 margin on Jan. 2.

Junior Petri averaged 18.8 points, 7.0 rebounds, 4.3 assists and 1.4 blocks per game for the Eagles during the month of January when they posted a 4-5 overall record and a 4-3 mark in the RMAC. She scored at least 17 points in six of those nine games, including a career-high 32 in a win at Colorado School of Mines. For the month, she hit a whopping 56.2 percent (59-105) of her shots, and 12 of 30 from the three-point line. She also knocked down 39 of 45 free throws. During the nine games in January, Petri led the league in scoring (18.8 points per game) and she tallied two of her three double-doubles this season while narrowly missing two triple-doubles. She was two assists short in one game and an assist shy in the other.  Last month, Petri led the team in scoring seven times, rebounding six times, assists eight times and blocks five times.  To date, she leads the RMAC in points per game (21.7), assists per game (5.4) and minutes played (38.4 average).  She also ranks second in the league assists-to-turnover margin (1.8), third in free throw percentage, and fourth in rebounds per game (8.6).
