Mesa State College student-athlete Jonny Maxfield died Sunday from injuries he sustained Friday in a one-vehicle accident, Mesa State football coach Joe Ramunno told The Daily Sentinel.
Maxfield was driving a pickup with a flatbed trailer Friday afternoon on Wyoming Highway 430 south of Rock Springs when the truck rolled, according to the Wyoming State Patrol.
The sophomore from Mountain View, Wyo., was flown to a hospital in Salt Lake City. Ramunno said Maxfield's family removed him from life support Sunday.
Maxfield was on his way to Pinedale, Wyo., to play in a basketball tournament, Ramunno said.
"He was a great kid," Ramunno said. "You won't find a higher quality kid. He was a hard-working man. We are all torn. It's a huge loss."
Maxfield came to Mesa State as a running back. He redshirted in 2007 and had one kickoff return for one yard last season. He switched positions to defensive back in spring practice.
He was a two-time Wyoming Class 3A All-State player and was a member of Mesa State's Student-Athlete Advisory Council.
