Mustangs Place 9th at Lady Moc Classic

The Western New Mexico University women’s golf team shot a 327 Tuesday to finish with a 54-hole total of 969 to place 9th in the prestigious Florida Southern College Classic. The three-day event was held this week at the Cleveland Heights Golf Club. The Classic was hosted by defending NCAA Division II national champion Florida Southern College.

Mustang senior Tina Bickford (Butte, MT) tied for 21st place at 232. Bickford posted rounds of 78, 78, and 76. Classmate Erika Willis (Douglas, NM) tied for 29th place at 235. Willis carded rounds of 77, 76, and 82

WNMU’s Rebekah Berve (Farmington, NM) and Carissa Schwalm (Las Cruces, NM) posted an 87, good for 63rd (tied) and 67th respectively.

Top-ranked Florida Southern College won the team title with 893, seven shots better than arch-rival Rollins University (900). Nova Southeastern University carded a 903 to finish third, followed by Barry University (905), Lynn University (928), University of West Florida (953), Northern Kentucky University (956), and Florida Southern University “B” (967).

Florida Southern’s Marianne Andersson won medalist honors with 222, edging out Heather Burgner (Florida Southern), Surita Risseeuw (Rollins), Sandra Changkija (Nova Southeastern), RemJin Camping (Barry) and Maha Haddioui (Lynn).

Eight of the top 20 teams in the NCAA Division II played in the 2008 Florida Southern College Classic. All total, sixteen teams participated in this year’s event.
