MSC's Sergio Romo called up to the Majors

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. -- June 25, 2008 -- Mesa State's former ace on the mound, Sergio Romo, was called up Monday afternoon by the San Francisco Giants front office. Romo, a reliever for the Connecticut Defenders, the Giants Double-A affiliate joined the club in Cleveland.

Romo (5'11, 190, RHP, Brawley, Calif.), 2005 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Year, was a reliever for the Defenders with a 1-3 overall record, recorded 11 saves in 12 appearances and a 4.00 ERA. Earlier in the season Romo had eight consecutive saves and ten straight scoreless innings for the Defenders.

In 2007 Romo was named Minor League Baseball Class A (Augusta) Relief Pitcher of the Year. In 2006 with Class-A Salem Keizer he led the Northwest League with 8 wins and ranked 8th overall with a 2.75 ERA. Romo earned a spot on the mid-season All-Star Team.

A NCAA Division II All-American, Romo was drafted by the San Francisco Giants in 2005.

The Giants are in Cleveland for a three game series with the Indians.
