by Bobby Heiken, Western State Sports Information Director
Gunnison, Colo. - Western State senior
offensive lineman Brandon Borchardt has been named to the West Team
in the 2008 Valero Cactus Bowl.
Borchardt is one of six RMAC players named to the game.
The Valero Cactus Bowl will be played Jan. 11, 2008 at 7 p.m. at
Javelina Stadium in Kingsville, Texas. The game is a showcase for
the top Division II seniors and will be televised regionally on Fox
Sports Southwest.
Borchardt earned Second-Team All-RMAC honors this past year after
serving as a team captain and helping mold a young Western State
offensive line.
Joining Borchardt on the West Team are RMAC players Beau Wendling
and John Strand of Chadron State, Derek Dykstra of Colorado Mines,
Rod Windsor of Western New Mexico and Kurt Kissner of Mesa
State.
The Cactus Bowl began as the Snow Bowl in 1994 at the Fargo Dome in
Fargo, North Dakota. After its initial seven-year run, the game
moved to Kingsville in January 2001. The game was played in
Kingsville for six years, took a hiatus last year and will return
to Javelina Stadium in 2008.
Former Mountaineers Chaumont Bouknight (2004), Josh Hotchkiss
(2001) and Tony Donald (2001) appeared in the Cactus Bowl, while
WSC Hall of Famer Jason Davis appeared in the Snow Bowl and earned
MVP honors.
