Adams State College

Adams State College was established in 1921 when the college's namesake, state legislator William "Billy" Adams, spearheaded the legislation to establish a teacher's college in Alamosa to serve rural southern and western Colorado.

A member of the RMAC since 1956, Adams State was a premier small college in the NAIA Division I before joining the NCAA Division II in 1992. Adams State has won nine National All-Sports Awards; earned 49 team National Championships; and has recorded more than 1,400 All-Americans since 1960.

In 1998-99, Adams State was awarded the highest achievement in collegiate sports when they won the Sears Directors Cup, an award that recognizes the top overall athletic department in each of the NCAA Divisions (I, II, III) and NAIA, for their excellence in sports.

Located in the San Luis Valley, North America's largest alpine valley, in the growing city of Alamosa, Adams State is situated at an altitude of 7,544 feet on flat land, surrounded by the majesty of the "fourteeners" in the Sangre de Cristo and San Juan mountain ranges. Residents of Alamosa can enjoy camping, mountain climbing, skiing, hunting and fishing, as well as the remarkable Great Sand Dunes National Park and the numerous ethnic celebrations and art shows.
