Joe Prater was the first ever football coach of Southern Colorado State College. He took it from a junior College status and guided it for 13 years. When the institution entered the RMAC, Joe was consistently voted the Coach of the Year for Sportsmanship and for Professional Behavior. In 1965 he was voted Coach of the Year in the conference. Joe will always be remembered for his positive influence on young men at the institution as well as an outstanding professor. He adhered stringently to the rules and insisted that his coaches and players do the same.
