Athletic Accomplishments:
McCartney was one of Chadron State College's all-time great running backs. He averaged 5.2 yards per carry during his career, finishing with 2,947 yards and 48 touchdowns. His banner year was in 1992, when he was a junior. That season, he rushed 267 times for 1,359 yards and scored 25 touchdowns. He also ran for two two-point conversions to score 154 points, the most in NCAA Division II. He was named to the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference's first-team that year. After rushing for 209 yards in an early-season game his senior year, he suffered a sprained ankle that plagued him the rest of the season. However, he still averaged 5.3 yards rushing that year. Following his collegiate career, McCartney played one year of what might be described as semi-pro football in Germany. He was one of three or four paid players on the team.
Academic Accomplishments:
McCartney graduated in December 1995 with a Bachelor of Arts degree while majoring in biology. He graduated with a 3.007 grade point average. He now works in construction in the Chadron area.
