Athletic Accomplishments:
Hatfield "Chilly" Chilson was a tailback and quarterback
under Myron Witham. He was one of the nation's first jump passers
and earned national recognition with that unique style. Chilly was
one of the leaders of the 1924 team, which shutout eight regular
season opponents then broke even in two post-season games in
Hawaii. He led CU as quarterback with back-to-back perfect seasons
and he left his senior year with a winning record of 6-3. He played
football for three years, basketball for four years, and baseball
for four years, earning all-conference recognition in all three. In
1985, Chilson was inducted into the Colorado Sports Hall of
Fame.
Civic Activities:
Chilson was named as Under Secretary of the Department of
Interior in 1956 by President Eisenhower who also appointed him as
a Denver U.S. district judge in 1960. Chilson continued to be a
U.S. district judge for 26 years. Chilson was president of the
District Attorneys Association. At age 87, Chilson passed away.
