RMAC Hall of FameWestern State College Wrestling Team - 1964 NCAA College Division National Champions
A year after winning the school's first-ever national championship,
the Western State wrestling team duplicated the feat in 1964,
capturing back-to-back National Collegiate Athletic Association
(NCAA) College Division Championships. The Mountaineers edged RMAC
foe Colorado School of Mines, 51-49, to win the title. The 1964
team featured two national champions - Al Rozman (191) and Bob
Hollingshead (137). As they did in 1963, the Mountaineers' march to
the title was benefited by depth at the national championships. Ray
Coca (115) finished second, Joe Kuhn (HWT) was third and Van
Doughty (123) finished fourth. Western's run through the regular
season again featured some impressive victories over bigger
schools. Western knocked off Colorado State (29-6), Colorado
(17-11) and Utah (22-8). Coca and Doughty were both selected as
NCAA All-Americans.
